5/5 From the opening credits, I knew I was in for something special with this one. Fox and I settled in for something completely unknown as we had not paid much attention to trailers and we were pleasantly surprised and drawn in from the first moment. With a score that beckons back to classic horror (picture a spider walking across the strings of various instruments), the mood was immediately set. Note that the producers of both Paranormal Activity and The Saw movies have easily outdone themselves and with a fantastic mix of psychlogical horror and jump out of your seat scares, this movie was the best surprise of 2011 this year. The story focuses on Renai (Byrne) and Josh (Wilson) and their family as they move into a new house. Soon things start to happen around their two children and eventually they discover they are not alone in the house. For the next two hours we were delighted by creepy children, unearthly voices and an incredible turn as a medium portrayed by the amazing Lin Shaye. The highlight for me was Josh's trip into the Further, an unearthly Limbo full of all things dead and creepy. As big a fan of horror as I am, this movie was the perfect film for me. Good performances by everyone involved, inclusing two young children, an incredible job of direction, considering the lack of budget, and all around constant creepy vibe. This is one of the best horror films made in years and I stand behind that statement 100%.
